I thought the first half of the book was really good, but whats up with Nooria it’s like she doesn’t love Parvana. I mean she dresses like a boy and does all the work and Nooria just treats her like dirt. Their mom is also really weird. She makes them do every thing, has Parvana become a boy and all she can do is sit on a couch and sob. What kind of mother is that? Other than that the book is really good. I can’t wait to see what happens next

  2.    Nolan Says:

Well, Kavan i guess maybe put his blog on the wrong link so i guess i have none to respond to, so for all of you people waiting to respond to a blog of 2nd half of the book, here it is:

I thought the second half of the book got a lot better. It explained more about the first half, had more facts, and had more action. I wish it told what happened to all of Parvana’s siblings. My pridiction is that they all made it out alive and it will get more into that in the sequal to the book. Whats yours? I am also glad that the father came home. Like the first half of the book, without the father going to jail, there would have been no story. So now, if Parvana’s siblings are at that refuge camp, that will make the story for the sequal. (Maybe.)

  3.    Norah Says:

On page 21 when the girls go into a arena thinking that it’s a soccor game and it’s a prisoer punissment a men says”There will be time enough when you are old enough to see such things.” I was thinking why would anyone want to see that sort of thing a all? It would depress me to see people being punnised like that for minor misbehaior. Also if people go to watch that happen to their fellow towmspeople that will just encourage the Taliban to continue doing that where as if no one watched the punniment the Taliban might not punnish them like that at all. Although it was very sad to read about that happening it gave you a realy good idea about the way the Taliban ruled Afganistan. I thought that the book was overall very written and I greatly enjoyed it!

  4.    sarah Says:

I liked the seconed part of the book! I thought it was very weard when Parvana’s faimly left her back at the house and brought a women member insted. If I told my faimly that I would not go to my brothers wedding they would have said well to bad you are going. It also was weard when Parvana’s faimly left Parvana and her mother’s friend Mrs. Weera and even though Parvana did not want to go she still felt sad that they did not take her. Near the end of the book I did not get why the people would help Parvana’s dad. I mean, they saw Parvana’s dad on the ground near the prison, they went to bring Parvana’s dad back to his house, so it was weard becouse if it wern’t Parvana’s dad it could havre been a murderur that escaped from jail prewtending to be nice, but when they are alone the man could have murdered them and robbed them. Also the end was very weard, because the last sentance said ‘Through the dusty front windshield she could see Mount Parvana, the snow on its peak sparkling in the sun’ what is that saposed to mean? Overall I liked the seconed half of the book.

    Norah,
I agree with you that why would eneyone want to see thouse things, I think maybe the people went to those becouse they might get punished if they don’t go. The people stole from people because of the Talaban, Because if it weren’t for the Taliban then people would not have to steal. I hate that the Taliban thought they were helping the people when they are making it worce!

    Sarah.

  6.    Norah Says:

    Nolan,
I agree that the second half of the book is better than the first half of the book. I thought that that was because the second half was more mysterious and that makes you want to read it more (kind of like Freak The Mighty.) I also agree that the fact that the family is in a refugee camp could be the topic of the sequal. I too was very glad that the father came home and I’m very curious as to why they let him out of jail. I think that they might have let him out because he was quite and didn’t complein. Does anyone have another idea? I think that all the family members will be all right and that they will make some very good friends at the came.

  7.    sarah Says:

    Nolan,
you are right that the second half of the book has had more facts and it explaines a lot more! Parvana’s faimly must be alive because then there would be like nothing to be in the sequal, because Parvana’s dad came back, I would get that Nooria’s husband got killed, but not the people in the faimly! They probably will make the sequal about them being in the sequal, because at the end of the book it said they were leaving to go to Parvana’s faimly.

  8.    Ava Says:

I am really dissatisfied with the ending to the story. It made me die for the squel! I also think that the mother, Nooria, Ali, and Marym will be found in the refuge camp, safe and sound. I also think that Shauzia and Parvanna will meet up, either in Pakistan or the Effiel tower.
I do like the book. It was like Freak the Mighty, okay, but not a book I would choose to read.
I wonder who published the mother’s magizine? I also wonder what Mrs. Weera’s grandaughter’s name was?

  9.    Norah Says:

    Sarah,
I also thought that it was a liitle strang that they didn’t take Parvana with them. If I were her I would really want to go because she might never see Nooria again. I do understand why they took that woman though because without them they wouldn’t have a car to ge to the wedding. I think that the men took Parvana father home because they figure that they should help anyone they can so many people can over come the Taliban. .In away that is one thing that is good about the fact that the Taliban took over because if that is why the men helped the father than the Taliban is actcidentily stenthing the way people think about each other. About the last sentence I think that it might have just been poectic ending

  10.    Nolan Says:

    Norah,
I totally agree with you. I was really wondering why they would do that(especially at a soccergame) and why anyone would want to watch that. I also agree that the book showed how the Taliban ruled Afghanistan. I also really enjoyed the book. It taught me all about Afghanistan and what it was like there. The book contained many facts like that.

  11.    Ava Says:

    Norah,
I agree with you about why the father was released. I also agree about the sequal. The whole book really is just leading up to the sequal. The second half was waaay better than the first half. I wonder about the “Window Woman.” Who was she? Will she come up in the sequal? Or is she just there to add dimesoin to the story?

  12.    Emma Says:

I found the second part of the book a bit disturbing. I did not like the part about the “soccer game.” At first I was confused when they said that there was a soccer game because sports were banned. I think it is interesting that there were/are more than one girl pretending to be a boy. It made me wonder if there are other girls being boys. Does anyone else think that there were/are other girls being boys? I can’t wait to hear what you think.

  13.    Rebecca Says:

I thought that the second half of the book was better than the first half of the book. It was kind of “nice” that Parvana had a friend that was a “boy” like she was. I can’t belive that Nooria was going to get married. I think even though Nooria is a snob, it was mean of Parvana to say “You will be back when your husband sees how bossy you are.” I thought that bone digging sounded like a weird way to make money. Why would anyone want bones? I would like to know why the Taliban were cutting-off people’s arms in a soccer stadium? I can see why they were in a soccer stadium, it is big and everyone can see(not like anyone wants to see!) At first I thought it was a soccer game. Then I rememberd that the Taliban forbad sport. I can connect this book to “The Secert School” by Avi. In The Secert School, a group of children hold a school secertly because the government closes down their school. Mrs. Weera also holds a “secert school” because the government closes down her school. It was interesting that at the end of the book Parvana’s friend says, “We will meet again twenty years from now on the top of the Effiel Tower in Paris.” The director of my camp always says to keep in touch with your camp friends because twenty years from now you could see then. I think that this book was kind of hard to understand because we did not know much about the Taliban. ihink it would be easier to understand if we were familier with the Taliban. I do think that it was a good idea to read the book so we could learn about the Taliban. Overall, I thought this book was interesting but also kind of disterbing.

  14.    Sean Says:

    Nolon,
I argee to the second half of the book is a a lot better. In the second half of the book there were more importnat passages because all the passages from the first half added on to the second half on the book that made it vey mysterious like Freak the Mighty. I also argee that how the dad got released from jail and I also think why did the dad get out of the jail so early. I thought he would be in prison for the rest of his life. In the second half of the book I was amazed that how Paravena put up with all the stress like in the first half on the book. It is also amazing how the Taliban did all the cruel stuff to the Afgranstan people. I thought the seconf part of the book was an outrages interesting section of the book.
    Sean

  15.    Emma Says:

    Norah and Nolan,

I too wonder why they let the father out of jail. The dad says that he did not know why they even put him in jail. I love the ending because the dad comes home and they leave you to wonder if the mother, sisters, and brothers are ok and alive. I also think that the mother, sisters and brother will be ok. I was wondering if there is another book about this topic. If anyone knows about another book about this could you tell me? I would love to read more about the Taliban and how people’s lives were during this time.

    ~Emma~

  16.    Deborah Says:

    hello,
The second half of the book was a bit sickening when the arms were cut off. I found that to be very creepy. I was happy for Parvana when her father came back from prison. I was glad he was able to regain his strength. The mother had left for Mazar for the wedding of Nooria. He gets news that the Taliban has bombed that city and many are dead. I wonder if they are dead or not. Parvana and her Father leave to go and find the family. I can’t help but wonder what they will find! I think they will be alive except Nooria.

    Deborah

  17.    Sarah Says:

    Nolan,
I agree with you that the book got a lot better! The second half of the book explained more than the first half, too. The auther probably did not talk about what happened to all of Parvana’s siblings because that is probably what the sequal is about, and also when the book ended it ended with her going to where her siblings were. Parvana’s faimly probably did get out alive, but maybe Nooria’s husband didn’t. Because in p. 151 the book said that when the friend Parvana found when she was telling them what happened about the Taliban troops taking her brother and father and shooting them in the street, well the Taliban might have done that to Nooria’s husband. I also am glad that the father is back. In your last sentince that you write Nolan, I think you are right.

    Sarah :^)

  18.    alev Says:

I think the second half was a lot better than the first . In the second half there was a lot more surprises like when Parvana meets her fried disguised as a boy too. I would never think that the father would come back I was very surpised at the ending. I till have a lot of qestons like are the mom and sister still alive? will she live to see peace in Afghan? Will she really go to Paris to see her friend?
It made the book interesting how people in Parvana s family relided on each other and in S auzia house people disliked each other and never helped.

  19.    Hayden Says:

I thought the second half of the book was just plain GROSS! I was SO disturbed when they went into the “soccer” rink and saw the Taliban cut that man’s hand off! I was also disturbed at the fact that the young boy was parading around showing off a belt with hands on it! I was happy that the father came back, but I felt like it was a forced ending. What I mean by that is that when the father came back it was kind of just la da la da and end the book. I really liked the book overall, but i just think it was weird to read about the bad stuff that other people have done. I also didn’t like the fact that Nooria was going to go off and get married, but the Paravana decided not to go. If I had been in her position, I would have gone because it’s her SISTER! Even if she had been mean to her she still is her sister after all! I couldn’t believe it when the mother said to Paravana that she could stay home! If you guys were in her position what would you have done?

  20.    dunne Says:

This book is, well, wowful, that’s not even a word, I know, but it shoulld be! There wasn’t a sigle page where I didn’t say WOW at least three times. It is just a wowful book. Amazing, stupendous, outrageous, but in a way, horrible. I was suprised the aotor didn’t make such a big deal when the dad came home. She just sort of slapped it down at the end of a chapter! Ijust, well, AHHH~! How to describe a book so amazing, yet so horrible! Like I said in my other entry, WHO WOULD WANT TO WRITE THIS?! I liked a quote in the book, I don’t know where exactly it is so this isn’t the same as it was written. “This is nothing like a summer vacation. We are not working towards anything! This will not come to an end.”
    Kira

  21.    Nick Says:

I just read Nooria is getting married!!!! I literally jumped out if my seat when i read that. I thought she was 17, why is she getting married? Apparently people there get married young. I think that this marriage come in at a bad time for this family. They have a girl dressed as a boy out in public! Do the people know this? Also, is Nooria going to live with them? There is no room in Parvana’s house for anyone else. Also, if she leaves who will look after the kids? This marriage is going to make a big impact in the story. If anyone isn’t doing there job or if there is more people in the way or big plans no one will be able to focus!!! Nooria has done this at a bad time. I read the next page a little and read that they were neighbors with the man she is marrying years!!! This is going to make drama and contervorsy! The second half is heating up!

    Nick

  22.    Rebecca Says:

    Norah,
I agree with you. Prisoners should not be punished for minor things they do. I would like to know why the Taliban let Parvana’s father out of jail. I think this book would benifit from a movie. Mrs. Dunne, if there are any movies about the Taliban I think it would be a good idea to show them to us so that we get more femiller with the Taliban.

  23.    Emma~ Says:

    Kira,
I also think that this book was “wowful!” It was also horrible because the chopping off arms happens every Friday! That just is not right! I mean some of the prisoners did not do anything wrong, like the dad foe example. He did not know why they put him in jail! I am looking forward to reading the next book because maybe the author will make a bigger deal of the fact that the dad is not in jail anymore.
    ~Emma~

  24.    Rebecca Says:

    Hayden,
I agree with you. The second half of the book was really gross. Cutting off people’s arms is not the kind of thing anyone wants to read about but it makes the story very interesting. I think Afganistan, under the Taliban rule is a good setting for a book. It has alot of conflict that makes the story interesting. It would NOT be fun to live in Afganistan. I think the fact that the Taliban forced girl to dress as boys so they can suport their family is wrong. Is that in the Caran(or whatever it is called!) My question is what is Afganistan like now and what is the furture for girls and woman? Overall, I thought this book was very interesting and the kind of book I don’t want to stop reading.

  25.    Ava Says:

    Kira,
I agree with you. The author really didn’t have the dad come home with much fanfare, he just came! The story kinda winds up for a dramatic ending, then it winds down agian without it.
    Hayden,
I also agree with you. The “socer” feild sence was just nasty! I’ve head of things like that before. If I was Parvanna, I would have chosen to go with Nooria, just for the thrill of travel, and so I knew what my sister’s husband looked like.
    Ava

  26.    Deborah Says:

    Bonjour Kira,
I actually disagree with you. I would want to write the book. I would because I would like to understand the book from each characters point of view. You get to do that when you are an author. Imagine seeing the story from Nooria’s point of view. Now that would be interesting. It would be hard to write because it would be difficult to write such a great (horrible) book! I bet writing this series of books really must have helped Deborah’s (the author, not me!) understanding of life in Afghanistan.
    Deborah

  27.    Chris Says:

I thought the second half of the book was both exciting and relaxing. It was exciting when Parvana and Shauzia went into the stadium to see people get hurt. I thought it was wrong and gross. It was relaxing when Parvana’s dad came home because it’s good to know that he’s back and not dead. Why did they let him go? Will Parvana and Shauzia ever meet in France? The world may never know, unless you read the sequel.

  28.    ~Emma~ Says:

I am reading the second book in the series and so far I think it is really sad. I think you all should read it! I am only on the 3rd page but I know I will love it because I love the Breadwinner. I think that the second part of the book was better because Parvana or should I say Kaseem has found a friend and they are doing everything together! I am glad that Parvana has a friend that she can trust. I think the second part of the book would be so different if Shauzia was not also pretending to be a boy. I am happy that Shauzia is in the book because I am not sure that I would like this book any differently. I would like though to see the auther treat the dads return more importly. Well I hope you all enjoyed the book an dI enckurege you all to read Parvana’s Journy (the next book) and Mud City (the 3rd book).

    ~Emma~

  29.    Deborah Says:

    Hello Hayden,
I agree with you that the book was gross. In fact I could not agree more. I found the second half was so repugnant, especially the “soccer stadium” part. This was so repugnant because you don’t cut somebody’s arms off just because they were trying to make a living. It was so vile, despicable, and grotesque; I wanted them to get punished instead. I would like to know how they got all of this “authority”!

    Deborah

  30.    Jared Says:

I thought that the second half was a lot more interesting than the first. Also it was getting really disgusting. Like when they cut the prisoners hands off. Also I can’t believe that Parvana met a girl dressed up as a boy from her old school. But seriously, people will give you money for digging up graves and getting bones. I am not done yet, but I only have two questions. Who is the lady in the window? And where is the father?

  31.    Mac Says:

I like the secnd half of the book much better than the first half because I love the part where they dig up the bones. I think it would be pretty cool to get payed for digging up bones. I part that I diddn’t like was when they went into the soccer stadium. I thought that it was terible that they would cut people’s hands off just because theur in jail. When I read that part I thought the father would be in it and Parvana would save him but that diddn’t happen. So I hope the other people like the second half of the book two.

  32.    Peter Says:

I thought the second half kind of was somewhere in betwen awful and exciting. I found out my prediction was wrong. One of my biggest questions was were the people forced to go to that soccer stadium? Or did they just go for plesure? Another question is how did women get burqas? Did their husband by it? Did the women make them? Did the Taliban give them? Did they get passed down? These are all questions I would like to know.
The book shows how cruel the Taliban were because on one part it says theifs hands were cut of and people would be tortured for no reason. Also how hard it was to live because on another part it says people were sick, starving and people were beggers. Over all I think the ending of the book was very good.
    Peter :^)

  33.    Mac Says:

Hayden I agree with you that it was just plain grosse but it stll was a great and unnusual book. But if the dad diddn’t come home their would not be a second book and than the book would not have a happy ending. Almost all books have happy endings. Mrs. Dunne I agree with you to and I love the book but she probally wrote this from stories people told her. It would be sad a little but on the back it sound like trhat she is part of the assosation for aphgan women and is donating all the royalties to tat foundation so she probally felt great afyer writing this book. She probally had to attend phisical therapy after though but I think this is a great book.

  34.    Mac Says:

Nolan and alev I agree with you got a whole lot better in the second half. Even though it was more gosse. I also wrote that in my entry because their is a lot more things going on. Kavan I agree wih you more for the first half of the book , in the seond half I don’t agree with you. Nooria gets much nicer in the second half but maybe it is bvecause she like that Parvana is making alot of money. but I still think that Nooria is really jealous. I hope that we have a great disscusion and the overall grade I give to the book is 9 1/2. h

  35.    Jared Says:

Emma I think you are right. I never thought that there might be other girls pretending to be boys. Or at least that was what I thought before Parvana saw Shauzia at the market. But you are right there could be other families that all the men are in jail, sick, dead, or just have no hands. That means that a girl in those families would have to become a man so the families could survive. Seeing that the Taliban take so many people for no reason there must be about 40 out of 100 families that have no men. I can’t even imagine what life was like for these girls.

  36.    Jared Says:

Hayden I completely agree with you. So many disgusting things happened in this half. Like when the prisoner’s hands get cut off. But really was it necessary for the author to put in that the man was swinging the hands on the rope around like a toy? That part completely grossed me out. Also it is wrong to dig up those graves for money. Parvana knows it is wrong, and that is why later she keeps seeing Mr. Skull and his friends whenever she blinks.

  37.    Paige Crotty Says:

    Hi everyone,
I thought the second half of the book was much much better then the first half. I thought the first half was ok. What is up with Nooria. I wonder if she is ever going to come back to say hi to her family. When Parvana’s friend tell Parvana that her grandfather is trying to find her a husband. I think it is kind of wrong because she is only 11 years old. Hopefully Mrs. Dunne pick the sequal to this book. I think that it is going to be so good. The part when it says my body shape changes i thought personly that was reallyGROSS and the part were it said that peaple Parvana’a age are having babys was GROSS too. Well ya thats all i really need to say tonight. Bye!! Bye!!
    ~Paige~

  38.    Paige Crotty Says:

    Hi Kira,
You are so right about everything you said. It is a great book but it is horrible at the same time. If i was the author. I would personly make a big big deal that the father came home. I htought that part in the book was a really happy moment. The only 2 parts i hated in the whole book were when Pavana and her fried were at the soccer field and the part in the book when Parvana’s friend said “My shape of my body cahnges.” I really thought was “SO GROSS!” well thats all i reallly have to say. Bye!! Bye!!
    ~Paige~

  39.    Paige Crotty Says:

    Nolan,
I agree on everything you say. Don’t you think tht the only 2 Gross parts are the soccer field thing when the people cut of the hand s of the people in jail and ewhen in the book it says that My shaape changes and if i canges to early i won’t look like a boy. I thought that part was SO GROSS!!!!!! Don’t you? Bye!! Bye!!

    ~Paige~
P.S. Thaks for throwing snow balls at me! Just kiding!

  40.    Griffin Says:

    VERRY CRAZY!
the second half of the book made me puzzled…… why would the taliban just ut off the theifs whole arm insted of just his hands, it would make it more groosome! why did the women get married at the age-noorias age? it had shocked me when parvanas father had gotten out of jain at the most important part of the book, for example; parvanas mother leavs, then homa comes and said people are getting shot were her family is, then paravana is about to leave!

    griffin

  41.    Hayden Says:

    Norah,

I agree with you that the Taliban are taking everything a little over the top, it wasn’t great in the first place, but now its just like, STOP IT! I think that the Taliban are making these people go to the arena because they want everyone to see how powerful they really are. If I were to be in this time I think that I would want to be a girl, and I wouldn’t want to be hit or anything, but when you think about it what do you think? The girls wouldn’t have had to see all this! Here are some of my thoughts about the differences in boys and girls: The first thought that pops into your head would be “Boys get so much more freedom in this time. They can do anything they want to,” but this really isn’t true. Look at Paravana’s father! He was a man but yet he still got put into prison and had to live a dreadful life! The only difference really from the father and Paravana is that she is a girl and he can work and walk around the street without anything covering his face. If Paravana could walk around without anything covering her face then she would be much like a boy! But she wouldn’t have to go and see the Taliban cut off people’s arms and stuff! Well, I guess I carried away from the subject a little! Sorry! Well Norah, I pretty much agree with you overall!

    Hayden

  42.    Hayden Says:

    Kira,

I agree with you that WHO IN THE WHOLE WORLD WOULD WANT TO WRITE THIS BOOK? I mean it’s a great book, but really cutting off hands and being gross and telling the scary reality of what is going on in our world?I just think it’s creepy! I also full-out agree with you that she just decided to slap down that the father came home! If my father came home from Jail when he hadn’t even done anything wrong, and I had written this book I would have made the whole chapter ABOUT him coming home! Know what I mean? I thought it was just TOO lucky that those men found him! You would think he would have died….hmmm… well I thought it was a magnificently gross book!

    Hayden :)

  43.    Matt Moore Says:

In general I thought the 2nd half of the book was better, (reading) but marking up the book was alot harder to me because all the questions were answered so I had to ask questions about the sequal. I can’t wait for the discussion on … uh well I forget when it is but I still can’t wait for it. (actually I can)that book realy made me wonder tink how many places in the world is it like this. if just most of afganistan that’s still to much. Think if you lived in afganistan with your family, how hard do you think it would be. I am 99.9% sure that it would be hard for my family. My family could barly survive, we would need so much $$$.

  44.    Kavan Says:

I loved the second half of the book. It was as good as I thought it would be, but the soccer part was gross! Other than that the author did a great job. The book is definitely a book that I would recomand to every one I know. There were sad parts, happy parts, and down right disturbing parts. Hayden, I agree that at the end when the father came back the author didn’t make it a very big deal. I also agree that Nooria shouldn’t get married she should stay back and live with the rest of her family.

  45.    Sean Says:

    Hello,
I thought the second half of the book was really good. In the second half of the book the soccer part was really disgusting because the Taliban was cutting people arms off. Were the people the Taliban was cutting the arms off thives. Why are they thives? How did the Taliban know that the people were thives? I thought there was alot of interesting passages like the soccer part of the story. If I could read the other book of the Breadwinner I think it will be really exicting because the breadwinner was so the next book as to be to.
    Sean

  46.    Sean Says:

    Nolan,
I argee with you to. I tought the soccergame was very distrubing becasue how the Taliban marched in and cut off the thives arms. I also thought the second half of the book was very fasinating because how thefirst half relates to the second half. I also thought It taught me alot about the Taliban and Afganstan. How did you think about the second half Nolan? WEll I thought the Breadwiner was a ggod book and i would want to read the sequal.
    Sean

  47.    Nolan Says:

    Mac,
I didn’t think it was cool at all to dig up bones for $$$. I thought it was very wierd and they were just doing that to make money, not because they thought it was cool. Although, they did make al ot of money for doing that but still, I really wouldn’t want to do that. I also agree with you, my least favorite part was at the soccer stadium because it was very discusting. Why would you want to see people getting their hands chopped off before a soccer game??

  48.    Ava Says:

    Deborah
I agree with you. The soccer field scene was horrific, but it did happen, and things like that still occur.
    Deborah,
I disagree with you. If the mother died, the sequel would just have one of those endings where it’s just really, really, pointless. I do think that Nooria will be alright though. Maybe she’ll be rescued by Parvanna and will stop hating her. I hope so!
    Ava

  49.    Chris Says:

    Matt
I agree with you. I also thought the book was hard to mark up. I also asked questions about the sequel. I wonder if Parvana will ever get tired of working. I also wonder if Parvana and Shauzia will ever meet up in France. The questions will probably be answered in the sequel.

  50.    jackson Says:

THIS IS THE BEST BOOK WE HAVE EVER BEEN FORCED TO READ! I loved the part when her father came back. It grossed me out when the Taliban people tortured the prisoner. I liked when she ran into Mrs. Weera. Then she helped the mom feel a lot better. I also liked how she met Shazia and they dug for bones to get some extra money. That is why I think this is the best book we were forced to read.

  51.    griffin Says:

    I agree with Kavan,
Nooria shold stay at home because then if her father didn’t come back the man nooria marries could make the money.

  52.    Chris Says:

    Nolan
I agree with you. I though the book explained a lot more than the beginning, which is what made it harder to mark up. I thought it was gross when they entered the “soccer” stadium. The men at the stadium were really nice, though. It ws probably because they looked like boys. I think the Taliban is really mean and I hope the sequel explains everything.

  53.    Jessica Says:

I agree with just about everyone when I say that the second half or the book was much better then the first half of the book. I thought that it was really sad when the man at the soccer game was getting his hands cut off. It was kind of gross too. Kira, I do not agree with you because even though this book was sad and discusting, it is true. I really did’nt like this book at all because it makes me feel bad for thinking the way I do about it (wich is that I really dislike this book.) The reason that I like the second half alot better is because there was more action, and not just sad discription.

  54.    Griffin Says:

    I agree with matt,
I do wonder what it is realy like in other places in the wporld were it is worse than what we have read!

    griffin

  55.    MIchael Villa Says:

I am so happy the father came back. Now that the father is back it will make a difference to this family. One part i didn’t like about the seconed half was that that guys arm got cut off. BUt overall I really liked the book. I also liked the seconed half because their was more action. This was the best book I have ever read.

  56.    Ben Says:

I thought the the second half of the book was much better than the first half. I liked the second half better because it was more exciting because there was more action. I think the part where Homa is telling the story of how the Taliban came and shot her mom, dad, and her brother was really sad. I wonder why the Taliban didn’t just take them to prison or do something not as violent as killing. I am happy the father came back because I think he is going to make a difference in the second book. I also think the book’s ending was happy and sad. Still, overall I think it was a really good book and I’m thinking about reading the sequel.
    Ben

  57.    Karina Says:

I thought this book was a bit disturbing at times I liked it. This book was okay. From a scale from 1-10 I would give it a 7. I thought that the part at the soccer stadium was weird because they cut peoples arms off. I did not really understand that. At the beginning when the father got taken away I thought he would come back and I was right. Since Parvana’s siblings are in a refuge camp what will happen to them in the sequel? I think that since the book ended very suspiciously it makes me want to read the sequel. (I hear the father dies!). Overall I liked the book.

  58.    Kira G. Says:

    Hayden,
I completely and entirely agree with you, the second half was just plain gross! YUCK! (Besides the fact that it was WOWFUL) I also would have to totally agree with you that Parvana should have gone with her family to Nooria’s wedding! I would have gone, but I also agreed with Parvana when she said “I am never satisfied with anything anymore!” You got that right! I really hate to do this, but I agree AGAIN with you! Why, honestly, would you want to go around showing off HANDS THAT HAVE BEEN CUT OFF?! I wouldn’t have been surprised if the boy had started to wear the HANDS as a necklace of something! I don’t know much about fashion, but I know that that was NOT in style! That’s for sure!
    -Kira
P.S. One of my entries is posted under DUNNE SAYS, but it’s really mine, just to let you all know!

  59.    Kira G. Says:

    Jessica,
Let’s agree to disagree! I do agree that the first half is much better than the first, and there is plenty more to write about, BUT! You disagreed with me that is sad and disgusting but that it was true. I NEVER SAID IT WASN’T TRUE! I realize that it is true (technically it is realilisic fiction, but whatever!) and it could happen, I also said it was WOWFUL! That would be the word I would make up if I could! There wasn’t I single page I didn’t say “WOW”. It is amazingly written, but then again, it is HORRIBLE! WHO COULD BEAR TO WRITE THIS?
    -Kira
P.S. Do they write from experience???? (I hope not!)

  60.    Matt Moore Says:

Mrs. Dunne-Their wre parts in the 2nd half were I actually got ..well uh tiered of all the suprises. I want and at the same time don’t want to say the book was a little plain in the 2nd half. Also i would not want to write this book. Actualy I might becuasse this book was good and that would meen I would inharite quite a lot of $, not enough, $$, still not enough! $$$, there we go. But the quote will become true in time (I hope so) because I dont think alot of people would want to follow the taliban so they will die of. There are only 2 words I can think of to describe the fact of the talibab gone. Hazzaa!!!, and Yay!!! personaly I like Hazza!!! P.S. wowful shouldn’t be a word.

  61.    Matt Moore Says:

Chris-Aw man I wont know if they meet in France then.=( also…..Relaxing!?! I woring my head of about the father! I would have to describe the book as ??? or that was such a good book, I want to read more, oh wait I wont find out in that book, I would have to read the sequal to the sequal! Oh ya the let him go because they got bored from beating him with a stick, stupid Taliban they dont just hate women, music, and education, they hate poor familys like them!!!

also i feel bad for the men who were slotered at the so called “soccer game”

  62.    Nick Says:

    Everyone,

I agree the part when they are at the stadium and the people are getting they’re arms cut off is wierd and creepy! Do they really do that? Why? What is the point in hurting you’re own people! The Taliban is stupid. How did they get in control in the first place? The people of Afghanistan should fight against them! There are many more people than there are Talib. I would hope so, unless they cut them apart!

  63.    Nick Says:

Ben I agree the second half is a lot better than the first. I also agree it is said when Homa tells about what happened to her family and i am happy to that the father is back! Just one thing, apparently he dies in the first sentence of the next book! I think that is stupid! Ending on a happy note, this was actually surprisingly a great, great, great book! coming from a person who doesn’t like to read it must be a good book. I think I’ll read the sequel and the thing after a sequel too!

    Nick

  64.    Brad Says:

I found the second half of The Breadwinner was A LOT better than the second half. If I was Pavanas friend… I would NOT have left… she did not REALLY know is the Taliban was there or not. And she thought they were not… But she was in corect. If there was a second book… i would posobly read it… I was not very interested in the book AT ALL.

  65.    Brad Says:

I agree with Ben and Nick. They said :

“Ben I agree the second half is a lot better than the first. I also agree it is said when Homa tells about what happened to her family and i am happy to that the father is back!”

( Nick said that)-(Nick agreed with Ben)

    -Brad Cohen

  66.    Brad Says:

I agree with matt. A LOT of the parts were very boaring! But some parts on the other hand were okay… I dont think ANY of the book wa “Great”

“Mrs. Dunne-Their wre parts in the 2nd half were I actually got ..well uh tiered of all the suprises. I want and at the same time don’t want to say the book was a little plain in the 2nd half.”

    (Matt said this)

    -Brad Cohen

  67.    Ben Says:

    Michael,
I am happy that the father is back too. I also think he is going to make a difference. I also didn’t like the part where the guys arm got cut off. I thought that was disturbing. I wonder why Afghans kill each other practically all the time? I would HATE it if I lived there. I would HATE it because I know I would NEVER have anything to do because the Taliban banned everything fun. Another reason I would HATE it is because I would have a very large chance of getting shot, beaten, or killed in some way. I still thought it was a good book though.
    BEN :)

  68.    Ben Says:

    Nick,
Are you serious that the father dies in the first sentence of the next book? I agree that’s stupid. That doesn’t make sense because he just got out of prison and everyone was happy. His dying disappoints me because I was looking forward to everyone being happy.
Though I’m disappointed with this beginning, I still would like to read the sequel. Are there more sequels? I would like to read them also because these books are action packed and not boring like Belle Prater’s Boy.
    Ben

  69.    Evan Says:

I loved this book because there was so much action in it and a lot of adventure. One thing i don’t get is how the Talib is in Mazar and people say it isn’t there. One thing about this book is everything is going on at once so sometimes i get confused and lose my place. I would like to read the second book and see what happens. This book kinda remindes me of Belle Praters boy (even though it was boring and this is exciting) because how one of the parents ggoes missing. I would like to read the sequel and find out what happens.

  70.    Evan Says:

I liked this book a lot and deffinitly want to read the sequel. It is a good book but sometimes it has so much going on i dont understand it. One thing is how people say there is no Talib in Mazar bbut then their is. I would like to read the next book and see what happens.

  71.    Evan Says:

    Ben, Nick
I agree with both of you it is stupid he dies. I thought the family was going to meet each other and get out of the bad places and live happily. I to would like to read the second book to see what happens and if Nooria gets truly marriedd to a good person. like i said before It is confusing but filled with action. If their is more than one sequel I would like to read them all.

  72.    jackson Says:

Nolan, I totally agree the second half was alot better. It tells you more of what they were doing in the story. I thought the soccer game was also disturbing and awesome at the same time. I agree with your pridiction. I thought they were going to get out safe and it will explain more in the sequal. I also wish that it explain more about the siblings. If I were like parvana I would have went with shouzia. I also thought the part with the dog and the arm in its mouth was disgusting.

  73.    jackson Says:

    Evan,
I agree with you and I really want to read the second book. So maybe I can get some more info on the siblings. I also agree that there were some points wear there was too much info and I didn’t get what was going on. But I think the father may die in the second book. So that is what I think about the story.

  74.    Janie Says:

Out of 5 stars I give this book a 3 ½. I thought the book was going to end happy and cheerful! I really want to read the 2nd book now because I just REALLY need to know what happens to the family! When Homa said on page 151 “The Taliban is in Mazar,” I was shocked! I have some questions. Why didn’t Nooria and the mother send them a letter or something about the Taliban being in Mazar? Are they dead? What do you think?
I really didn’t like that part when the soldiers were killing the prisoners. That is gross! I would NOT like to be there when that happened! Who wants to watch people suffer? I sure wouldn’t! That must have been HORRIBLE!

Over all I think this book was very well written!

  75.    Janie Says:

    Nick,

I agree that it is very creepy! It is pointless to kill your own people!Shouldn’t they be trying to save their people and happy a nice community? At least the Untied States is safer then in Afganistan! I would be soooooooo scared to live in Asia! I am so glad that I get to live in a nice house, with parent who can feed me and care for me ,and for me to go to a nice school!

  76.    alev Says:

Kaven I don’t agrea with you that the mom was not doing any help in the whole book she only was moping for 4 days not the whole book

  77.    Janie Says:

    Ava,

I 100% agree with you on being disatified on the end of the book! It made just go bilistic!! I would also not pick up this boo and read it but thank goodness Mrs. Dunne assigned the book to us!! I wonder wha the squel is about!!!!!! Maybe Mrs.Dunne will have us read it! That would be cool!

  78.    alev Says:

norah I agrea with you who would want to see that happen it must be so depresing in afganitan whth the tariban around won’t any one stan up to them in real live not in their mindes

  79.    Peter Says:

    Jackson
I agree with you that this book was very good. I also thought it was funny when you wrote forced to read. I also agree with you on how the father comes back. I liked it because it gives you hope for the family. One reason I was dissapointed was because my prediction was wrong. I also think it was gross when the taliban cut those peoples arms off. I disagree with you on liking the bone diging. It was just kindof wrong.
    Peter:^)

  80.    Peter Says:

    Ben
I also agree with you on how the second half was better then the first. I also agree with how their was more action. I think it was sad when they shot Homas family. I think that was unnesacary, and I also wonder why the taliban didn’t put them in jail. I agree the ending is sad and happy. I think this type of ending makes you want to read the sequels.
    Peter:^)

  81.    Karina :) Says:

    Evan,
I completely agree with you when you say there is too much going on. I to would like to read the sequel and find the answers to my questions. I think if you read the sequel some things will make more sense.

  82.    Karina Says:

    Sean,
I agree with you strongly. The book can get confusing at times but I think if you read the sequel it will make more sense. When the Taliban people cut of peoples arms that was gross!

  83.    Willy Says:

It was so obvious that the father would come back. I think the author should have twisted that a little. I also think that there was almost no purpose in the character Homa she was just there to tell Parvana that the Taliban invaded Malzar. She could also be important to though because if she wasn’t there Parvana wouldn’t have known to go to Malzar. One more thing what was with the woman in the window that made no sense at all? Where was the point in putting in a woman who all she did was drop things on to Parvana’s blanket. I bet she will come in later. My last question is will Parvana leave Afghanistan at the end of the series?

  84.    Willy Says:

Matt I completely agree, i think that the second half of the book was much better than the first. I also agree with paige though it was disgusting. The part where they choped the other poeple to pieces was cruel. It makes you think i mean deer don’t chop each other to pieces so why should we. It seems like the taloban are out to make peoples lives horrible. I am so glad that i live in america.

  85.    Willy Says:

Peter i agree with you the bone digging was wrong. i think the author put that in to show you how extreme people had to go to suvive. i also think that this book shows you that people always want more. Fro example the taliban wanted more so they invaded malzar, parvana wanted more after she got her tray. I think thats why they are wars and other horrible things. I am also willing to bet that the people who got chopped up only did what they did so they could live in the talibans evil riegen

  86.    Kavan Says:

    Evan,
Who is the person you are talking about? If he is the father, he dies in the second book not the first. I agree with you, Ben, and Nick that it is silly that the father dies. I mean, he’s there for five seconds and whoosh he’s dead. Ben, I would hate it if I lived there too. I could die, get shot, or beaten for no reason. In addition, I would be bored because I couldn’t play sports, play video games, or watch TV.

  87.    MIchael Villa Says:

    Willy,
I agree with you . it was kind of obvious that the father would come back. The auther shoud of made it twisted like you said. i also think that the women in the widow was point less. It was also kind of wierd that she wuold drop things on the blanket. I wonder what will happen to PAravana in the other books.

  88.    MIchael Villa Says:

    Brad
I totally agree with you . I also agree with you that the second half was much better then the first half. And if i was her friend i would not leave like you said. Yes if their is anoter book i could possible readit.

  89.    Matt Moore Says:

Emma- I completely agree with you that soccer game was disturbing. But I forgot about the sports laws so I was confused and freaked out at the same time. I also just wanted to punch that Taliban man with the dead hands on the rope right in the face. I also think there about 10% of women in Afghanistan do dress like boys.
    -Matt

  90.    Kavan Says:

    Willy and Peter,
I agree with both of you that the bone digging was wrong. However it definitely showed how desperate they were because of the Taliban. Willy, I also agree that the book shows that people want more. Another example is Parvana wanted to dig up the bones to make more money even though her family would have been fine anyway.
